Tern 2 vs. Ascender: Which Accurate Reel Is Right for You?

Tern 2 vs. Ascender: Which Accurate Reel Is Right for You?

When choosing between the Accurate Tern 2 and Ascender, the question isn't simply which reel is better. It's which reel is better for the way you fish.

Both reels feature machined aluminum construction, Accurate's TwinStarDrag® technology, excellent free spool, and the compact feel Accurate is known for. Where they separate is in their gearing, drag capability, manufacturing, finish, customization, and ultimately, price.

Here's how to decide which one belongs on your rod.

Tern 2: Built for the Angler Who Fishes Hard

The Tern 2 is Accurate's premium star drag reel, designed and manufactured in the USA for anglers who put serious time on the water.

The reel starts with a fully machined frame and sideplates made from 6061-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum. Machining the reel from solid aluminum allows us to create a rigid, lightweight platform capable of handling the loads generated by powerful saltwater fish.

Inside, the Tern 2 features stainless steel main and pinion gears.

This is one of the biggest differences between the Tern 2 and Ascender.

Stainless steel gearing is designed for durability and longevity. If you're the angler who fishes every weekend, spends a lot of days on the water, or simply puts a lot of hours on your equipment, the Tern 2 is built with that level of use in mind.

It also features Accurate's TwinStarDrag® system, which applies drag pressure to both sides of the gear for smooth, powerful drag performance.

The Tern 2 also incorporates Accurate's XCT® cast control system, giving anglers additional control when casting while still delivering the free-spool performance star drag anglers look for.

Then there's customization.

Because the Tern 2 is manufactured in our facility in the USA, it opens the door to custom colors and configurations that aren't available with the Ascender. For anglers who want a reel that's uniquely theirs, the Tern 2 offers significantly more options.

The Tern 2 is for the angler who fishes hard, fishes often, and wants a premium American-made star drag built for long-term use.

Tern 2 models start at approximately $499.99 MSRP, depending on size and configuration.

Ascender: Maximum Performance at an Accessible Price

The Ascender was created with a different goal:

Build a high-performance Accurate star drag reel with machined aluminum construction and TwinStarDrag® technology at a price point accessible to more anglers.

Starting at $299.99 MSRP, the Ascender delivers a tremendous amount of reel for the money.

The Ascender is designed and engineered by Accurate in the USA, with components manufactured overseas and final assembly and quality-control processes handled to Accurate's specifications.

Like the Tern 2, the Ascender features a machined 6061-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum frame and sideplates. This gives the reel the rigid, solid feel anglers expect from a machined aluminum reel rather than relying on a molded or graphite frame.

One of the primary differences is inside the gearbox.

The Ascender uses a brass main gear rather than the stainless steel gearing found in the Tern 2.

That isn't necessarily a negative.

Brass gearing can actually give the Ascender a slightly smoother feel when turning the handle. For many anglers, especially those who aren't fishing hundreds of days a year, it's an excellent balance between performance, feel, and cost.

Where stainless steel has the advantage is long-term durability. Under constant heavy use, the stainless gearing in the Tern 2 is designed to provide greater longevity.

The Ascender also produces somewhat less maximum drag pressure than comparable Tern 2 models, but it still incorporates Accurate's TwinStarDrag® technology, applying drag pressure to both sides of the gear.

For the majority of everyday saltwater applications, that's plenty of performance.

Why Does the Ascender Cost Less?

This is an important distinction.

The Ascender isn't less expensive because we simply removed the features that make an Accurate reel an Accurate reel.

It was designed from the beginning around a specific price target.

By using brass gearing, simplifying finishes and configurations, and utilizing overseas component manufacturing, we were able to create a machined aluminum TwinStarDrag® reel starting at $299.99.

The Ascender is offered in a matte black finish and does not have the same custom color options available with the Tern 2.

That simplicity is part of what allows us to deliver the reel at its price point.

Which Accurate Reel Should You Buy?

The decision really comes down to how much you fish and what you want out of the reel.

If you're on the water constantly and put a lot of hours on your equipment, step up to the Tern 2. The stainless steel gearing, increased drag capability, USA manufacturing, and customization options make it the reel for anglers who demand more from their equipment over the long term.

If you're looking for a solid, machined aluminum saltwater reel at a great price point, the Ascender is extremely hard to beat.

You still get a machined aircraft-grade aluminum platform. You still get TwinStarDrag® technology. You still get the compact design and performance philosophy behind an Accurate reel. You're simply getting it in a more streamlined package built to hit a lower price point.

And don't overlook the brass gearing. The Ascender can actually feel slightly smoother through the handle, while the stainless gearing of the Tern 2 is designed to win when it comes to long-term durability under heavy use.

Neither reel is designed to replace the other.

The Ascender brings Accurate performance to more anglers. The Tern 2 takes that performance to the next level for anglers who live on the water.

Choose the reel that matches how you fish, put line on it, and go use it.

Small Reels. Big Fish.
